地域とつながる外構と園舎の構成/
新宿・歌舞伎町に近く、多国籍の住民が暮らす大久保という地域特性を背景に、子どもが地域と緩やかにつながる子ども園を構想した。街路に面したビオトープと雑木林の園庭から、2階テラスのハーブガーデン、屋上の芝生広場とキッズファームへと、緑が階段状に連続する構成は、都市部においてもすべての保育空間が園庭やテラスに面する配置となっている。これらの園庭やテラスは、外部からの視線や動線を緩やかに調整する緑の層として安心感を確保するバッファー空間として機能している。その中で、子どもたちが回遊しながら身体を動かし、主体的に遊べる立体的な園庭環境を形成している。

「異年齢保育」に対応した保育空間と構成/
RC造二層の園舎は、1階には園庭と直接つながる３?5歳児の保育空間、2階には南テラスに面した２歳児と、穏やかな光と風が届く中庭に面した0?1歳児の保育空間を配置した。異年齢の子ども同士が関わり合い、その差異からまなびと発達を促す「異年齢保育」のための空間として、子どもの発達に応じた機能とサイズを備えた家具も個別に設計し、その配置によって遊びのコーナーを柔軟に構成している。日常の保育に加え、入園・卒園などの保護者も含めた様々な季節行事にも多目的に対応できる可変性を備えた保育空間の考え方は、スペースが限られた都市部において重要であり、年間を通した日常の保育と園の運営の理解は、自分の父親保育体験を通して結実したものでもある。

歳月とともに育つ、都市の中の緑の拠点/
陽当たりに恵まれた屋上のキッズファームで育てた作物をキッズキッチンで調理できる、緑と食の体験が連続するプログラムを組み込み、園内で完結する自然との関わりを深められる建築とした。竣工から歳月を経て緑が繁茂し、建築を包み込み始めた今、ビオトープと共に都市部に点在する緑の拠点の一つとして機能し始めた様で、野鳥や昆虫が飛来する環境に育ちつつある。建築と一体化した果実や花やハーブなど季節感ある緑豊かなこの環境が都市部の裏通りに潤いをもたらし、新宿の摩天楼とともに、ここで過ごした子どもたちの原風景となれば幸いである。

Architecture that Connects Children and Community
Situated in Okubo, a dense inner-city district near Shinjuku and Kabukicho with a highly multicultural population, the project proposes a childcare center that gently mediates relationships between children, architecture, and the surrounding urban community.

A sequence of green spaces rises in a stepped formation from a street-facing biotope and woodland garden, through a second-floor terrace herb garden, to a rooftop lawn and kids’ farm. This vertical continuity of greenery enables all childcare rooms to face either gardens or terraces, an uncommon condition in a dense urban context.

These outdoor layers function not only as play spaces but also as vegetated buffers, softly controlling sightlines and circulation from the surrounding streets while ensuring a sense of security. Together, they form a three-dimensional garden environment that encourages children to move, circulate, and play autonomously.

Spatial Strategy for Mixed-Age Childcare
The two-story reinforced concrete structure is organized to support mixed-age childcare, a pedagogical approach that promotes learning through interaction across age groups. The ground floor accommodates childcare spaces for three- to five-year-olds with direct access to the garden, while the second floor houses spaces for two-year-olds facing a south terrace and for infants aged zero to one oriented toward a calm inner courtyard with controlled daylight and ventilation.

Custom-designed furniture, scaled and programmed according to each developmental stage, enables flexible configurations of play and learning zones. This spatial adaptability allows the childcare rooms to respond not only to daily activities but also to seasonal events involving parents, such as entrance and graduation ceremonies?an essential consideration in space-constrained urban environments.

A Growing Green Node within the City
The rooftop kids’ farm, benefiting from ample sunlight, is integrated with a kids’ kitchen, creating a continuous cycle of cultivation and food preparation within the building. This closed-loop program deepens children’s engagement with nature despite the urban setting.

As vegetation has matured over time, the architecture has become increasingly enveloped by greenery. Together with the biotope, the project is beginning to function as one of the city’s distributed green nodes, attracting birds and insects and contributing to urban biodiversity.

By integrating seasonal plants?fruit trees, flowers, and herbs?directly into the architecture, the project introduces a richly textured landscape to a quiet backstreet, forming a distinctive urban environment set against the high-rise skyline of Shinjuku and shaping the early memories of the children who inhabit it.
